'설악의 화가'라 불리는 김종학은 1937년 평안북도 신의주에서 출생했다. 1980년에 들어서면서 그는 '추상에 기초를 둔 구상'으로 설악의 사계를 그리기 시작하면서 ‘꽃의화가’ ‘설악의 화가’로 널리 알려지게 되었다. 작품에서 새와 나비, 꽃과 나무, 산과 물 등이 25년간 넘게 화가의 관찰을 통해 강렬한 색채와 질감으로 생생하게 나타나 있다.

이러한 요소들은 관람자에게 대상에 가까이 다가가 있는 시각적인 효과로 나타나 추상과 구상을 교차하는 작가 자신만의 화풍을 구축하였다. 작업은 자연과 우주를 포함하며 작가가 바라보는 대상을 통하면서 김종학의 내면세계 및 풍경으로 볼 수 있다.

그의 작품에 대해 미술평론가 오광수는 “김종학의 화면에 떠오르는 것은 개별이면서 전체다. 대상으로서의 개별과 전체로서의 풍경이 오버랩된다. 개별이면서 전체, 동시에 전체이면서 개별로서 다가오는 대상과 풍경은, 대상과 풍경이기 이전에 자연이요 우주다. 꽃이 있고 나무가 있고 새가 있지만 그것들은 하나같이 자신만을 주장하지 않는다. 하나하나 분명하게 윤곽을 드러내는 개별로서 구현되지만 자연 또는 우주라는 거대한 울림 속에 부단히 함몰된다. 자연 및 우주의 거대한 울림은 뜨거운 에너지로 화면에 폭발한다. 화면에 다가가면서 숨막히는 이유는 너무나도 생경한 자연 또는 우주의 기운에 부딪치기 때문이다.”라고 언급했다.
