정창섭(b. 1927-2011)은 한국의 첫세대 현대미술의 화가이자 세계적 현대미술 장르 단색화 작가(Monochrome painting)로서 전통과 현대 그리고 동.서양의 정신과 물질 등 이질적 개념이 공존하는 작품의 세계를 구축해왔다. 해방 이후, 한국전쟁의 파편과 잔해가 남아있던 시기인1953년 제2회 국전에서 ‘낙조(落照)’로 특선 입상 후 한국 화단에 등단, 그의 작업은 제 2차 세계대전 직후 왜곡된 형상과 질감의 효과를 통해 격정적, 심리적, 형식적으로 표현한 앵포르멜 (informel)의 추상성과 닮아있다. 이후 1970년대 중반이후 한지를 이용한 작업으로 방향을 전환하며 1980년대 들어서 '닥'시리즈를 처음 내놓아 주목을 받았다.

닥의 원액에 대한 조형화를 작가는 ‘회화의 시적변용’이라하며 “이른바 나의 닥 작업은 완제품으로서 종이를 사용하여 그 위에 종이의 특성을 이용한 인위적인 조형이 아닌, 종이의 물적 실존성에 나의 감수성을 동화하여 물(物)과 아(我)의 일원적 합일을 체험하는 쪽으로 진행하게 된 것이다.”라고 언급했다.

작가는 공간개념과 시간의 의의를 ‘바깥’과 ‘안’에 중점을 두며 달과 태양을 지칭하는 원환을 통해 사물과 작가자아의 합일의 징후를 나타냈다. 인터뷰 중 “한국의 문화는 종이와 함께 출발하고 지속해왔다 […] 어떻게 해서 이렇게 연약한 듯이 보이는 종이로 삶의 공간을 이루었을까? 거기에는 독특한 ‘시공(時空)관’이 작동 하였던 것이 아닐까? 시간과 더불어 열을 받으면서 차츰 누르스름하게 바래어가는 장판지를 통해서 시간의 축적과 앙금을 느끼며 창호지의 문을 통해 대기의 광풍은 물론 시간의 추이를 극명하 게 체험할 수 있었을 게 틀림없다. 실내에 있으면서 밖의 분위기나 시간의 흐름을 체 험할 수 있었고, ‘안’과 ‘밖’의 두 세계를 공유하게 되었을 것이다. 외부 세계를 경험하되 종이를 통해 체험함으로써, 마치 먹 그림처럼, 저녁이 오고 아침에 태양이 비치 는 것을 알게 되었을 것이다. 이 때문에 그림을 그림에 있어서 억지로 만들지 않음으로써, 만들어지는 세계를 지양하게 되었던 게 틀림없다.”라고 설명했다.
