김환기 (1913-1974 ) 는 20세기 한국을 대표하는 추상미술의 선구자이자 대가이다. 그는 한국을 넘어 일본, 프랑스, 미국에 걸치며 순회적 삶을 통해 작품에 대한 질문을 발전시키고 표현하며 하나의 독창적 추상스타일을 나타낸다. 예술가가 되기로 결심한 후, 동경 일본대학 예술학원 미술부에 진학, 1934년 아방가르드 조직에 합류하여 추상 미술운동에 참여하기 시작했다. 그의 작품은 전통적인 한국적 미와 유러피안 모더니즘 (European Modernism)을 결합하며, 구성주의 성향의 추상미술을 표현, 이는 한국적인 미와 현대성 그리고 서양 논리를 겸비한 작품세계를 드러낸다. 작품 성향은 1) 일본 유학 시절 (1930-1940) 2) 해방 이후 미국으로 떠나기 전 (1945-1963) 3) 미국 뉴욕 시기 (1964-1974)로 나뉜다. 일본 유학시절 대표작인 ‘향’, ‘론도’ 등은 미래파 (Futurism)와 구성주의적 표현이 두드러진다. 이후 해방 이후 파리를 거쳐 뉴욕으로 이주 전에는 ‘월광’, ‘산월’등이 대표작으로 한국의 풍경 및 소재인 달과 산, 구름과 학, 나목 등을 작가의 시각에 의해 둥근 형태나 단순한 선 등으로 표현하며 한국적 특성 및 시적 정서와 풍류를 반영한다. 마지막으로 뉴욕시절에는 작품의 추상성을 견고하게 발전시켜 점과 선이 무수히 반복되는 지속적으로 작업, ‘어디서 무엇이 되어 다시만나랴’가 대표적이다. 이러한 푸른 점들은 점차 번져나가 신비로운 우주적 공간을 형성한다.
